Important:

The purpose of the Search Wizard for Leases is to track oil and gas leasing and related activity. It is designed to show who is leasing or permitting in an area and the general location of the activity. It provides a summary of instrument terms, and tracks the expiration dates of instruments. The Search Wizard for Leases does not deal with mineral title. It locates instruments only as accurately as the abstract or section, and does not locate instruments specifically by their meets and bounds description. The database is designed on a "tract" basis, and as such includes only one instrument from multiple instrument tracts. (For example, if multiple leases are taken simultaneously on the same tract of land, then the database will record only one of the leases.) In addition, instruments are located on the map depending upon the number of abstract locations included in the instruments. If there are multiple abstract locations in the instrument, then that instrument will be displayed at each abstract location on the map. For this reason, in any given search there may be more points displayed on the map View than instruments displayed on the Table View. The Leases database is obtained from the public records, and is updated at irregular intervals. No data exists for instruments filed for record prior to 1/1/2000. Each county has a unique date range for which data is available, and counties are being updated constantly. See Valid Dates.

Required Data

Location Tips:

-Choose a district, or a county, or even an abstract or section within a county. The counties and districts for which coverage exists are displayed in the drop down boxes.

See  Searching by Abstract or Section

Time Period Tips:

-You must first determine if you want to search by Filing Date, by Instrument Date, or by Expiration Date of the Primary Term. Then, select the date range for which you want to search. Note, all of the instruments in the database were filed for record after 12/31/1999. Each county has a unique date range for which data is available, and counties are being updated constantly. See Valid Dates.

Optional Data

Instrument Type Tips:

-Select the Instrument Type for the search.

-"Lease" includes leases and memorandums of lease

-"Lease Option" includes options to lease and memorandums thereof

-"Seismic Option" includes seismic permits / options to lease, and memorandums thereof

-"Release of Lease" includes releases of oil and gas leases

-"Other" includes ratifications, amendments, etc.

Grantor Tips:

-Grantor is the person, or entity, granting the instrument. In the case of an oil and gas lease or seismic option, the Grantor is the mineral owner. In the case of a Release of Oil and Gas Lease, the Grantor is the oil company holding title to the lease.

Grantee Tips:

-Grantee is the person, or entity, receiving the instrument. In the case of an oil and gas lease or seismic option, the Grantee is the oil company taking the lease. In the case of a Release of Oil and Gas Lease, the Grantee is normally the original grantor of the lease.

Term Tips:

-This is the primary term of the instrument that is recorded in months.

Royalty Tips:

-This is the royalty granted in an oil and gas lease and is not relevant for other types of instruments.

Bonus Tips:

-The lease bonus is only available for certain leases. Specifically, BLM and State leases. The bonus is unknown otherwise. If you search for leases with bonus between $5-$20, you will exclude all leases for which bonus is unknown.

Delay Rental Tips:

-This is the delay rental set out in an oil and gas lease and is not relevant for other types of instruments.

Selectable Columns Tips:

- Here you have the option to choose additional data elements that will be returned as columns in table view.

Display Tips:

-Display relates to how the data is to be displayed on the map. Note, instruments with multiple abstracts will be displayed in multiple locations on the Map while being displayed only once on the Table.

-Display point only - The instrument will be displayed as just a spot on the Map for an uncluttered look at an area. This is especially useful for a regional view.

-Bubble by Term - The instrument will be displayed with a variable point size in direct proportion to the length of the instrument's primary term.

-Bubble by Royalty - The instrument will be displayed with a variable point size in direct proportion to its royalty. This is relevant only for leases.

-Display Royalty beside point - The instrument will be displayed with the royalty beside the point. This is relevant only for leases.
